COLUMBIA, S.C. -- COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College athletic department honored its student-athletes at its annual athletic awards banquet on Monday night.

Women's track and field standout Krishanda Campbell-Brown received the John E. Brown Award, taking Benedict's top student-athlete award for the second year in a row. The award is named after the former legendary coach and athletic director, who spent 32 years serving Benedict College, where he coached football, baseball and basketball for the Tigers. This award is given to the most outstanding student-athlete. Campbell-Brown earned indoor track and field All-American status for the second year in a row by finishing seventh at the NCAA Championship. She helped lead the Lady Tigers to the SIAC championship in outdoor track, scoring 54 points and earning the Cleve Abbott Award, presented to the person who scores the most points in the SIAC Track and Field Championship.

The Lucius F. Clark award was presented to men's cross country and track standout Dessie Demlew. The award is named after the former coach who resurrected the Benedict golf program and is given to any student-athlete who has shown outstanding character and has brought national exposure to the college and athletic program. The recipient also has provided leadership within their sport area, and has shown dedication to help other student-athletes grow.

Demlew won his first three cross country meets this season. He later won the SIAC meet and the South Region race. In track and field, he received the award for scoring the most track points at the SIAC Championship. He won the 10,000 meter, 5,000 meter, 3,000 meter steeplechase and came in second in the 1,500 meter race.

The winner of the Jimmy Green Memorial Inspiration award was softball player Cecelia Lykes.

The award is named in honor of one of Benedict's outstanding football alumni and is presented to a student-athlete who has been confronted with life-altering experiences and has utilized perseverance, dedication, and determination to overcome the event. This award is presented in recognition of Mr. Green's dedication and commitment to Benedict College.

The department also recognized seven student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA, as well as 99 student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The Central Midlands Booster Club presented its special award to Benedict women's basketball coach James Rice.

The Benedict Individual of the Year Award went to Dr. Thomas Jerome Smith.
