Benedict Cruises To 3-0 Volleyball Win Over Shaw

Lorena Leao had 10 kills against Shaw.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers volleyball team picked up their first win of the season, cruising to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Shaw University Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays Human Resource Center.

Benedict won 25-7, 25-13, 25-8 to improve to 1-1 on the season. Shaw fell to 1-7.

The match was delayed nearly 30 minutes as Shaw arrived late due to travel delays. But the holdup didn't slow down the Lady Tigers, as they scored the first five points and jumped out to a 13-3 lead. Benedict continued to control the match and Talena Milhouse closed out the game with an ace.

The Tigers kept the pressure going in the second game, jumping out to an 11-4 lead. Benedict increased the lead to 22-10, and Lorena Leao closed out the game with a pair of kills.

Benedict scored the first seven points in the third game, increased the lead to 19-4, and cruised to the 25-8 win to clinch the victory.

Benedict coach Gwen Rouse said it was good to get the first win of the season.

“We played up to our potential,” Rouse said. “The first and third game, our serving was superb.”

Benedict finished with 18 service aces. The Lady Tigers hit .383, including a sizzling .529 in the third game. Leao and LaTayvia Mack each finished with 10 kills, and Mack hit .625 for the match. Ashley Jackson had 29 assists.

Benedict continues its homestand on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Paine in the first conference match of the season.

“Paine has a returning hitter who is good. They return their top two players,” Rouse said. “They're a scrappy little team. We've got to be ready to play.”
