COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College volleyball team won its second straight match, defeating Paine College 3-0 in an SIAC conference match Thursday night in the HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers won in straight games for the second consecutive game, downing the Lady Lions 25-18, 25-13 and 25-16.
Benedict improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in SIAC play. Paine falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in game one, with LaTayvia Mack sparking the team with three kills. Paine cut the lead to 18-12 before Benedict pulled ahead 24-15. Benedict had match point for three more serves before freshman Tatyana Robinson closed out the game with a kill.
Paine took an early 5-1 lead in the second game, before the Lady Tigers stormed back. Benedict surged ahead on a 16-2 run, taking a 20-9 lead. Talena Milhouse served for nine consecutive points in that stretch, and Robinson had a pair of kills.
Benedict powered to a 12-1 lead in the third game, with Mack leading the way with three kills. Paine closed the lead to 18-10 and got within 22-16 before the Lady Tigers closed the game with three consecutive points, including a kill from freshman Lorena Leao.
Mack led the Lady Tigers with 17 kills and hit .351. Leao had seven kills and Terae Sweeting had six. Ashley Jackson had 30 assists and Tyrealle Reed had 14 digs.
“Right now, as a team they are having fun,” said Benedict coach Gwen Rouse. “They are playing well together as a team. The last two games, we've really been playing good defense.”
Benedict continues its homestand on Tuesday, facing conference rival Claflin at 7 p.m. Paine has a tri-match on Saturday against Spelman and Morris.
