Miles Rallies To Edge Lady Tigers

FAIRFIELD, AL – The Benedict College women's basketball team saw a 13-point second-half lead evaporate as Miles College rallied to take a 48-44 victory on Thursday night in an SIAC game.

Benedict lost for the second consecutive game and fell to 8-3 overall and 7-2 in the SIAC. Miles improved to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the SIAC.

The Lady Tigers led 20-14 at halftime, as both teams suffered shooting struggles in the first half. Benedict made six of 27 shots for 22.2 percent. But Miles was even worse, making just three field goals on 26 attempts for 11 percent.

A jumper by Brittany Jackson with 9:15 left in the game gave Benedict a 37-24 lead. But the Lady Golden Bears scored six straight points, with Sammeika Thomas hitting three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.

The big blow was a 10-point run by Miles that gave the Lady Golden Bears a 46-42 lead with three minutes left in the game. Santera Grooms snapped the run with a fast-break layup with 1:07 left to cut the lead to 46-44, but the Lady Tigers didn't score again and Miles hit two free throws in the last minute to secure the victory.

Jackson led Benedict with 12 points. Grooms had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Miles shot 50 percent in the second half to improve to 30.8 percent for the game. Benedict shot 28.6 percent for the game.

Benedict continues its road trip with a game at LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday.
