Benedict To Open SIAC Volleyball Tournament Against Miles

LaTayvia Mack and the Lady Tigers begin play in the 2012 SIAC Volleyball Championship on Wednesday.
ATLANTA – The Benedict College volleyball team will open play in the 2012 SIAC Volleyball Championship on Wednesday against Miles College at noon, the conference office announced Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers finished fourth in the SIAC East Division with an 11-5 record and are the fourth seed in the East. Miles College finished fifth in the West Division with a 2-14 conference record and 2-25 overall. Benedict defeated Miles in their only match during the SIAC Crossover Tournament in September, taking an easy 3-0 victory.

A win over Miles would send the Lady Tigers into a second-round match against rival Claflin University. Claflin finished tied with Clark Atlanta for second place in the East Division and earned the second seed by virtue of the league's tie-breaking procedures. That match would be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Benedict and Claflin split their two regular-season matches, with  the Lady Tigers taking a 3-1 win in Orangeburg, while the Lady Panthers won 3-0 in Columbia.

Should Benedict fall to Miles, they would drop to the loser's bracket and would face the loser between Stillman and the winner between LeMoyne-Owen and Paine at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Albany State is the host of the tournament and all matches will be played at the HPER Gymnasium on the campus of Albany State University.

Albany State is the top seed in the East Division after going 16-0 in conference play. Two-time defending champion Kentucky State is the top seed from the West with an 11-5 conference record.
