Arkansas Tech Surges In Second Half To Take Down Lady Tigers

Box Score RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas Tech used a pair of second-half spurts to pull away for a 74-55 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Benedict College Lady Tigers at Tucker Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Suns (5-3) went on an 11-0 run over a span of 3:46 to take a 55-45 edge with 11:28 left in the second half, and they followed that up with a 10-0 spurt over a span of 3:39.

By the time the second and decisive run was over, Arkansas Tech held a 70-50 edge with 4:44 to go. The Suns cruised from there to a 25th consecutive home win over non-conference opponents.

The first half saw four ties and 10 lead changes. Arkansas Tech claimed a 38-32 halftime lead with a 7-0 run to close the period. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Westin Taylor put the Golden Suns in front at the intermission.

Jessica Weatherford led Arkansas Tech on Wednesday with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Caitlyn Spurgeon added 11 points.

Ashley Thompson scored a team-high 15 points for Benedict (3-7). Alexus Jones had 13, while Monique Weathers added 11.

The Lady Tigers struggled with their shooting, hitting just 35.6 percent for the game, including 27 percent in the second half.

The Lady Tigers are back in action on Dec. 29 and 30, playing in the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic in Morrow, Ga., where they will face fourth-ranked Clayton State and Lander.
