Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Benedict College fell behind by 14 points in the second half, but a late rally came up a point short as Johnson C. Smith beat the Lady Tigers 54-53 on Saturday.
The Lady Golden Bulls took a 43-29 lead on a layup by Chante' Bell, but then the Lady Tigers started to come back with
Brittany Jackson hitting a short jumper, and
Ashley Thompson scoring on a fast-break layup after an
Alexus Jones steal.
Benedict went on a 7-0 run with Jackson scoring a layup, a steal and layup by Jones, and a 3-pointer by
Monique Weathers to cut the lead to 52-49 with 1:57 to play. A jumper by Johnson C. Smith's Karnina Bunch pushed the lead back to five points, but Weathers hit another 3-pointer to make it 54-52 with 26 seconds left. A free throw by
Chelsea Whittaker made it 54-53.
Jackson led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Weathers added 11 points.
The loss dropped the Lady Tigers to 3-6 overall. Benedict beat Johnson C. Smith 55-37 in the first meeting on Nov. 15 in Columbia.
Benedict has an 11-day break before taking on Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Ark., on Dec. 19.
