After two straight weeks of breakdowns on punting and special teams, Benedict head coach
James Woody said the Tigers have corrected those mistakes. With five blocked kicks allowed, Benedict ranks last in Division II in that category. Benedict also ranks last in net punting, at just over 24 yards.
"I'm real happy the way practice has been going. We didn't see a lot of mistakes in the kicking game. We corrected all those things with the punt team, and Brian (Curry) just has to relax and do his job like he did all of last year," Woody said. "We put a lot of time in the punt situation. We put a lot of time on special teams, and that's every week, but we put a little more extra time in that punt team, as well as the kickoff team. I expect that punt team to have a mistake-free great game this week."
Along with improved play from the special teams, the Tigers know their defense will be tested as well. The Stillman Tigers have a prolific offense, and lead the SIAC in passing offense and total offense, averaging more than 446 yards per game.
Last week, Stillman quarterback Josh Straughan threw for 437 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an injury. His backup, Torrance Moise, came in and scored a touchdown on a 33-yard run. Woody said he's heard that Straughan is not expected to play on Saturday.
"They lost their quarterback, that's what I'm hearing," Woody said. "I'm not sure how true that is. We'll see once we get there to the game. They've got a backup and he's very quick and fast and I worry about him. He can run the football, and he's much faster than the starter. He's very mobile and we've got to contain him and take him out of his rhythm."
Two key players for the Benedict defense are linebackers
Charles Powell and
Kelvin McCollum. Powell leads the defense with 22 total tackles, while McCollum is right behind with 20. Along with another linebacker,
LaMarcus Hudson, the three are natives of Alabama, growing up about 35 miles away from Tuscaloosa.
"They're excited, those three kids. They'll have a lot of family members there," Woody said.
Powell, a sophomore, is looking forward to his first college game at Stillman. He and McCollum grew up playing on the same youth football team, but then attended rival high schools. But the three Eutaw, Alabama natives came to Benedict on a recruiting trip together. The coaches here talked about turning the program around at Benedict, and the three were sold.
One reason why Benedict's top tackler has just 22 total tackles through five games is that the Tigers are deep and talented at the linebacker position. Defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Mike Fanoga rotates his linebackers to keep them fresh. That platoon system has helped Benedict's defense, which still ranks high in total defense. This week the Tigers are seventh in total defense and sixth in passing yards allowed.
"We're holding each other accountable for what we have to do," Powell said of the defense. "We know  each other is going to be there. We just join together as a unit."
