Lady Tigers Rally To Beat Miles, 61-50

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers outscored Miles 14-1 in a second-half surge to rally and defeat the Lady Golden Bears 61-50 on Saturday in an SIAC women's basketball contest.

The game was played at Allen University's gymnasium as Benedict's HRC Arena was being used for spring class registration.

Santera Grooms scored a season-high 23 points, with 21 of those coming in the second half, to lead the Lady Tigers. Grooms also had a game-high 12 rebounds. Jasmine Stubbs added 10 points as Benedict improved to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the SIAC. Britenique Harrison added 10 rebounds as Benedict dominated the boards, 60-33.

Alease Allen and Enria Samuals each had 12 points for Miles, which fell to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC.

Miles took the lead early and led by as much as nine points, 27-18, in the first half before Benedict cut the lead to 29-22 at the half.

The Lady Tigers scored the first seven points of the second half, with Grooms scoring on a jumper, Latoya Fairley added a layup, and Grooms hit a 3-pointer to tie the game.

Miles regained the lead and had a 34-31 advantage with 14:36 left to play. Benedict then outscored Miles 14-1 over the next five minutes, holding the Lady Bears without a field goal. Grooms had six points during that stretch.

After shooting just 24 percent in the first half, Benedict improved to 42.3 percent in the second half and finished at 32.7 percent. Miles shot just 22.6 percent in the second half and finished at 30 percent for the game.

Benedict will be on the road, traveling to LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday and Lane on Thursday before returning home to face Kentucky State next Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
