Tigers Take Down Clark Atlanta, 20-10

ATLANTA – The Benedict College Tigers scored three first-half touchdowns and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 20-10 victory over Clark Atlanta University on Saturday at Panther Stadium in an SIAC East Division showdown.

Quarterback Cameron Stover threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half, as the Tigers built a 20-3 lead. Stover suffered a mild concussion in the first half and did not play the second half. The Tiger offense sputtered in the second half, gaining just 83 yards. Rodney Hall stopped two Clark Atlanta drives in the second half. He had his first interception of the season in the third quarter, then recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter when the Panthers had a third-and-goal from the Benedict 5-yard line.

With the win, Benedict improves to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta drops to 2-5, 0-4.

"In the first half, we came out and played some good football in all three phases of the game," Benedict coach James Woody said. "I was excited to see the offense click in the first half. Overall, I was pretty excited about the win. I thought the defense did a very good job. They may have popped one or two on us, but we played assignment football, and that's what we challenged them to do. I take my hat off to the defense. They did a good job."

After Clark Atlanta missed a 23-yard field goal attempt on its first possession, Benedict marched 75 yards on eight plays for the first score. Stover scored on an 11-yard run and Benedict led 7-0 with 6:35 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers went on a long, 13-play, 68-yard drive that spanned the end of the first quarter into the second quarter. Stover threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Dion Hamilton. Tory Mimbs missed the extra point, and the Tigers led 13-0 with 11:15 left in the second quarter.

A fumble by Jevric Blocker on a punt return gave the ball back to the Panthers. But the Benedict defense held the Panthers to a 29-yard field goal.

On Benedict's next possession, Stover threw a 15-yard touchdown strike to Jeremy Glinton to put the Tigers ahead 20-3.

In the second half, Hall intercepted Clark Atlanta's Earl Trenton on the Panthers' first series and returned it 40 yards to the Clark 32-yard line. The Benedict offense stalled at the 23, and Mimbs missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.

The Panthers cut the lead to 20-10 early in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run by Montavious Taylor.

The Tigers failed to move the ball on their next series, and the Panthers took over at their own 6-yard line. A big 46-yard run by Matthew Daniels put the Panthers at the Benedict 26. The Panthers had a first-and-goal at the Benedict 4. After a pair of runs lost a yard, Shaquan Mitchell fumbled the ball on third down and Hall recovered for the Tigers with 2:53 left to play.

Benedict was able to run out the clock, getting a key 20-yard pass to Kendariss Brown to keep the drive alive. Brown finished with five catches for 57 yards.

Clark Atlanta rushed for 242 yards on 51 attempts, but attempted just 10 passes, completing four and had one interception. Clark Atlanta finished with 299 yards of total offense, compared to 257 for Benedict.

Antonio Thomas led the Benedict defense with seven total tackles, all solo, and had a sack.

Benedict returns home to face Morehouse College next week at 2 p.m. for Homecoming.
