COLUMBIA, S. C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers took over sole possession of first place in the SIAC East Division with a 3-1 victory over Claflin College in an SIAC volleyball match on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
After losing the first game 25-22, the Lady Tigers came back to win the next three games, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23. Benedict improves to 12-6 overall and 9-3 in the SIAC. Claflin drops to 11-8 overall and 7-4 in the SIAC.
Lorena Leao led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills, while
Terae Sweeting added 11 kills.
LaPromise Boone had a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs.
Aaliyah Lawson barely missed a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs.
Je'Nae Saunders had a team-high 27 digs.
The first game was close the entire way. Claflin pulled away from a 21-21 tie with two straight points. Benedict scored the next point to make it 22-23, but Claflin scored the next two points for the win.
The second game was also a close affair with ties at 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 before the Lady Tigers reeled off four straight points for a 16-12 lead, getting a kill from
Tatyana Robinson, two kills from Leao and a service ace by
Kelsey Green. Claflin closed the gap to 22-18. A kill by Leao gave Benedict a 24-19 lead, but Claflin scored the next two points. Benedict put the game away with a kill by Sweeting.
Benedict used a strong run in the third game to take a big lead. After holding a slim 7-6 lead, Benedict scored 10 of the next 12 points for a commanding 17-8 lead. A kill by Sweeting made it 23-10, but Claflin rallied to cut the lead to 24-15. Benedict won the game on a kill by Leao.
The fourth game was another close contest with neither team holding more than a two-point advantage. A kill by Sweeting tied the game at 20, but Claflin pulled away with the next two points. Benedict closed out the match by scoring the final four points. Claflin committed three attack errors in the span, including the match winner.
Benedict plays its next four matches on the road, starting with a trip to Fort Valley State on Friday.
