Lady Tigers Stay Alive At SIAC Volleyball Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won back-to-back matches over Stillman and Clark Atlanta to stay alive in the 2014 SIAC Volleyball Championship after suffering a loss to Kentucky State in the opening match of the day on Tuesday.

Kentucky State defeated Benedict 3-0 to drop the Lady Tigers into the loser's bracket. Benedict then defeated Stillman 3-0 for the second time in two days, then survived a tough match with Clark Atlanta, 3-1.

Kentucky State and Claflin are the two unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. Those two teams will face each other at 10 a.m. Central Time on Wednesday, with the loser dropping into the loser's bracket to face Benedict at noon (Central Time). The winner of that match will advance to the championship at 3 p.m.

In the first match of the day, Kentucky State took a 25-16, 25-9, 25-22 victory. Terae Sweeting had eight kills to lead the Lady Tigers.

Next up was Stillman. For the second day in a row, the Lady Tigers swept Stillman with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 victory. Jocolby Brown had 12 kills, while Sweeting and Aaliyah Lawson had nine kills each. LaPromise Boone had 37 assists, while Je'Nae Saunders had 20 digs.

The final match of the day was a 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 victory over Clark Atlanta. Benedict (18-11) trailed in each set, but rallied to win the first, third and fourth sets. Lawson had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Boone had 40 assists and Saunders had 28 digs.

Clark Atlanta had a 22-20 lead late in the first set, and the two teams swapped the next four points to give the Lady Panthers a 24-22 lead. Benedict got a kill by Lawson and a ball handling error by Clark Atlanta tied the game at 24. A kill by Tatyana Robinson won the set for the Lady Tigers.

Clark Atlanta scored the first six points of the second set. Benedict caught up and took a 21-19 lead after scoring six straight points. A kill by Arneshia Parrish gave Benedict a 22-21 lead, but Clark Atlanta closed out the set with the final four points.

The Lady Panthers had a 22-18 lead late in the third set but Benedict rallied with seven straight points, with Saunders serving for the final six points. Brown had a kill and Saunders had an ace, then the Lady Panthers committed four straight attack errors.

Clark Atlanta held a 19-18 lead in the fourth set, but the Lady Tigers scored three straight points to take the lead and held on for the win. Benedict scored the final four points on Clark Atlanta errors.
