YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers held Young Harris to 16.7 percent shooting in the second half and rallied to take a 48-41 victory on Wednesday in a non-conference women's basketball game.
Benedict won its second game in a row to improve to 2-0 on the season.
London Richardson and
Maya Nelson scored nine points each to lead the Lady Tigers.
Kristine Lesane had a game-high nine rebounds.
Young Harris led 19-10 midway through the first half, but the Lady Tigers rallied to tie the game at 22 on a layup by
Destiny Betts. Young Harris made two free throws in the final 32 seconds to take a 24-22 lead at the half.
Young Harris took a 28-25 lead on a 3-pointer by Briana Bell with 18:20 on the clock. Benedict then outscored the Lady Mountain Lions 9-0 over the next nine minutes to take a 34-28 lead. Benedict took its largest lead, 41-33, on a layup by Nelson. A pair of layups and two free throws by the Lady Mountain Lions cut the lead to 41-39 with 4:04 to play, but they could get no closer.
A jumper by
Britenique Harrison gave Benedict a 43-39 lead and
London Richardson made a three-point play for a 46-39 lead with 1:20 left. Young Harris cut the lead to 46-41 on a pair of free throws by Peyton Robinson with 1:02 left.
KaDeeja Vaughn closed out the scoring with two free throws with 13 seconds left.
Both teams struggled from the field, with Benedict shooting 27.6 percent, while Young Harris shot 22.7 percent for the game. Benedict had a 47-38 rebounding advantage.
Benedict and Young Harris will play a rematch on Tuesday at Benedict at 6 p.m.
