COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Clark Atlanta University 3-2 on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
After losing the first two sets 25-19 and 25-21, Benedict rallied to win the next three, 25-22, 25-21 and 15-6. Benedict improved to 10-9 overall and 9-5 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta fell to 10-8 overall and 9-4 in the SIAC.
Aaliyah Lawson had a double-double with a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs.
Arneshia Parrish added 11 kills.
Je'Nae Saunders had 34 assists and a team-high 20 digs.
For Clark Atlanta, Cori Smith had 19 kills and 14 digs. Kiara Govan had 43 assists. Tierra Ford and Sierra Scoggins added 11 kills each.
In the third set, the score stayed close the entire way, with the score tied at 16 before Benedict scored four straight points, as Lawson had two kills, for a 20-16 lead. Clark Atlanta cut the lead to 22-21, but Parrish recorded a kill for a 23-21 lead. Clark Atlanta got a kill to cut the lead to 23-22. Benedict won the set after a block by
Jocolby Brown and
Kiarra Pettway and another Clark Atlanta error.
In the fourth set, Benedict jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but Clark Atlanta came back and tied the match at 15. Benedict scored the next three points, but Clark Atlanta cut the lead to 19-18. Benedict scored the next five points for a 24-18 lead. After Clark Atlanta scored three straight points on kills by Ford, Benedict put the set away with a kill by Pettway.
The Lady Tigers trailed the fifth set 3-1, but rallied to take an 8-4 lead thanks to five straight attack errors by the Lady Panthers. Benedict scored the final four points on a kill by Saunders, a Clark Atlanta attack error and back-to-back service aces by
P'yuncka Kearse-Peeples to close out the set.
Benedict is back in action with a match against Albany State on Friday at 6 p.m.
