COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 24
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Coker College 83-57 on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers improved to 11-1 on the season. Coker fell to 6-6.
Benedict scored the first 10 points of the game and held Coker to just 16.7 percent shooting in the opening period. Benedict led 28-12 after the first 10 minutes of play and held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Regime McCombs led Benedict with 26 points, hitting six 3-pointers.
KaDeeja Vaughn added 11 points. Jazz Green led Coker with 11 points.
Benedict outrebounded Coker 53-39 and had an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points.
The Lady Tigers shot 38.3 percent from the floor, while Coker shot 27.6 percent.
There were a total of 53 fouls called in the contest, with Benedict taking a season-high 47 free-throw attempts and making a season-high 29 free throws. Coker was 21-of-32 from the line. A skirmish in the third quarter led to four players - three for Coker and one for Benedict - getting ejected.
Benedict led 49-23 at the half, and increased the lead to 19 points, 63-44 heading into the fourth period. The Lady Tigers maintained a 20-point lead throughout the fourth period, taking the largest lead, 83-54, with 1:40 left on a 3-pointer by
Dorothy Brown.
Benedict is back in action on Thursday for a 6 p.m. News Year Eve home contest against Newberry College.
