FRANKFURT, Ky. – Taylor Sanders hit a buzzer-beating jumper to lift the Kentucky State Lady Thorobreds to a 74-73 victory over Benedict and hand the Lady Tigers their first loss of the season.
KaDeeja Vaughn sank one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to give Benedict a 73-72 lead. Kentucky State called a time out with five seconds left to set up Sanders' game-winning shot.
Kentucky State improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SIAC. Benedict fell to 5-1 and 2-1.
Vaughn led the Lady Tigers with 21 points.
Terri Jacobs added 14 points.
Destiny Betts scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while
Regime McCombs also added 11 points.
Sanders led Kentucky State with 25 points.
Benedict had a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and built the lead to as much as eight points in the second quarter. Two free throws by Jacobs gave the Lady Tigers a 27-19 lead with 5:20 to play before the Lady Thorobreds closed out the first half with a 16-5 run to take a 35-32 lead at the break.
Kentucky State scored the first seven points of the second half for a 42-32 lead, and later took a 51-37 lead with 4:35 left in the third period, but Benedict closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run. Betts closed out the third quarter with a three-point play.
The Lady Thorobreds took a 63-54 lead on a 3-pointer by Alexandria Stanford with 5:32 left in the game, but the Lady Tigers scored the next nine points to tie the game with 3:15 to play. Betts scored on a pair of layups and Vaughn hit a 3-pointer and two free throws.
Benedict had a 72-69 lead after a pair of free throws by Jacobs with 48 seconds left. Kentucky State's Logan Powell scored on a layup, was fouled, and sank the free throw to tie the game at 72 with 34 seconds left.
Benedict returns home to face Tampa on Saturday at 3 p.m.
