COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Britenique Harrison scored a career-high 27 points and the Benedict College women's basketball team finished the season undefeated at home with a 68-54 victory over Claflin on Thursday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Harrison, one of seven Benedict seniors recognized on the night, also had nine rebounds and two blocked shots for the Lady Tigers (19-5 overall, 14-2 SIAC).
KaDeeja Vaughn added 16 points and
Kristine Lesane, the current SIAC women's basketball Player of the Week, chipped in 14 points and had nine rebounds.
Shakiema Ravenell led Claflin (13-13, 6-11) with 16 points, while Shaniece Brown had 14.
The Lady Tigers had a 27-22 lead with 3:14 left in the first half before scoring six straight points. Claflin hit one free throw with three seconds left to make it a 33-23 score at the half. Benedict opened the second half with six consecutive points to push the lead to 39-23.
Claflin cut the lead to 47-38 with 9:48 left in the game, but Benedict went on another run, scoring seven straight points to regain a 16-point cushion. Benedict had its largest lead, 58-40, after a pair of free throws by
Victoria Dickerson with 5:29 left to play.
Benedict held Claflin to 30.6 percent shooting from the floor. Benedict entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to an average of 34 percent shooting. Benedict also ranks fourth in the nation in rebound margin, and had a 47-38 rebounding advantage against the Lady Panthers.
Benedict concludes the regular season on Saturday at Paine College in Augusta, Ga.
