COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers tuned up for the SIAC basketball tournament next week with a 79-48 non-conference victory over Barber-Scotia College on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Resting their top four players, the Lady Tigers got a career-high 22 points from
Victoria Dickerson and a season-high 14 points from freshman
Carissa Shropshire in the victory. Freshman
Deja Stallworth, who had scored just two points all season prior to Wednesday, added 10 points.
Maya Nelson had a season-high 13 rebounds.
Benedict, which came into the game ranked fourth in the NCAA in rebound margin, out-rebounded the Lady Sabers 79-33.
Benedict, ranked fourth in the nation in field goal percentage defense, held Barber-Scotia to 27.9 percent shooting, including 25 percent in the second half.
Benedict led 33-23 at the half, but used a 10-0 run early in the second half to take a 46-26 lead. The 31-point final margin was Benedict's largest lead.
Benedict, now 21-5 overall, has a bye in the first round of the SIAC tournament, and will take on the winner between Lane and Claflin at 1 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala.
Lindsay Lee led Barber-Scotia, now 10-16, with 18 points.
