COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers turned the ball over 10 times and the Elizabeth City State Vikings were able to cruise to a 55-0 victory on Saturday night in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
"It was a tough night. There was a lot of blooper reel football out there tonight," Benedict head coach
Mike White said.
Five of Elizabeth City State's eight touchdowns came after Benedict turnovers. The Tigers had four fumbles, four interceptions and two blocked punts on the night.
"We just didn't play well at all," White said. "I thought we saw some glimpses of some guys giving us better effort than last week, but there were too many turnovers and too many mistakes. I am disappointed in the way we played tonight."
The Tigers (0-2) struggled offensively for the second straight week. Benedict did finish with 128 yards rushing on 43 carries, with
Edward Kelley leading the way with 32 yards on nine carries. Benedict played all four quarterbacks on the roster, hoping to find an offensive spark. Starting quarterback
Kalu Onumah completed 5-of-12 passes for 40 yards and was picked off three times and had a fumble.
Charles Foster had an interception and a fumble.
Mason Duckett and Patrick Hoard also had some brief playing time.
"We were not good (offensively)," White said. "I think we played all four quarterbacks and they all got turnovers. We weren't good. We couldn't run, we couldn't pass, we couldn't hold on to the ball."
And the Benedict defense has now given up 15 touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season.
"It's one of those things that's tough to deal with when you've got young guys on the field," White said. "Over and over, we keep making the same mistakes. I was just disappointed in the way we performed. I kind of scratch my head. I thought we would see more improvement than what I just saw. I'm disappointed, I really am."
Elizabeth City State scored two touchdowns in each quarter. They got their first score after a 98-yard drive on a 28-yard pass. The Vikings scored on a 15-yard fumble recovery by Tyrrel Jones in the second quarter and
Stephen Williams scored on a 26-yard fumble return in the third quarter. A blocked punt with three minutes left in the game gave the Vikings the ball at the Benedict 37 with 3:13 left. The Vikings scored the final touchdown of the game on a 29-yard pass with 55 seconds left in the game.
Edward Kirkland led the Benedict defense with 10 tackles.
The Tigers are home again next week against Central State University. The Marauders (1-1) are coming off a 49-12 victory over Clark Atlanta on Saturday.
