COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College volleyball team couldn't hang on to leads in the first and fourth sets as Fayetteville State took a 3-1 victory over the Lady Tigers on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays Human Resource Center.
Fayetteville State won 25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20 to improve to 2-4. Benedict dropped to 1-2 on the season.
Aaliyah Lawson led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double.
Jocolby Brown added nine kills.
Je'Nae Saunders had a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs.
Benedict jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set, but the Broncos outscored the Lady Tigers 9-1 to take a 12-11 lead. Benedict tied the match at 16, but Fayetteville State scored the next four points. The Lady Tigers scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to 22-21. Benedict tied the score at 23 after a kill by Brown, but a Benedict attack error gave Fayetteville State the next point, and the Broncos closed out the set with an ace.
The Broncos scored the first six points of the second set to take an early lead. Benedict rallied to tie the score at 10. The Lady Tigers trailed 16-15 before Fayetteville State scored five of the next six points for a 21-16 lead. Benedict scored the next point, but Fayetteville State closed out with four straight points to take a 2-0 lead.
Fayetteville State pulled ahead 19-18 in the third set before Benedict rallied with four straight points for a 22-19 lead. Benedict took a 23-21 lead on a kill by
Arneshia Parrish, but Fayetteville State scored the next two points to tie the set. The score was tied again at 24, but Benedict took the lead on a kill by Lawson, and won the set on a Fayetteville State attack error.
Benedict built a 20-17 lead in the fourth set, but then the Broncos scored the final eight points to close out the match.
Benedict travels to Albany State on Saturday and Fort Valley State on Sunday before returning home to take on North Greenville on Tuesday.
