COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers committed six turnovers and ended the 2016 football season with a 22-7 loss to Point University.
Benedict was held to 214 yards of total offense, and the only score came 19 seconds into the game on a 15-yard run by
George Myers Jr. following an interception by
Edward Kirkland on Point's first play of the game.
After that, the Tigers never threatened to score. Benedict's only scoring threat came on the final drive of the game, reaching the Point 23-yard line, but
Mason Duckett's pass into the end zone was intercepted.
Phillip Brown threw three interceptions in the first half, while Duckett was picked off twice in the second half.
"I thought we would come out and play a lot better. Maybe we counted this a little too quick. We were thinking about a winning season, about sending our seniors out right and we come out and really kind of stink the place up today," Benedict head coach
Mike White said. "Poor tackling, poor blocking, just a terrible performance all the way around. It's the worst game of the year. We saved the worst for last. I thought we would play a lot better than that. That kind of falls on me so it's my fault."
Myers, one of five seniors the Tigers recognized at halftime, finished with 92 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Myers, named the MVP of the SIAC on Friday, finishes the season with 1,184 yards rushing. But the Tigers finished with just 111 yards rushing, compared to 125 for Point.
"I thought we would run the ball. It's just disappointing all the way around. We just had nothing," White said. "We never even threatened them. I'm glad we got the turnover, or we might not have even scored. Defensively, we just missed so many tackles today. It was just a poor performance all the way around."
After Benedict took the quick early lead, the Skyhawks drove 59 yards on nine plays and got a 23-yard field goal by Wesley Rubiera to cut the lead to 7-3. The Skyhawks took the lead when Brown was scrambling and tried to throw a screen pass deep in Benedict territory, but Point's Craig Armstead stepped in front of the pass and intercepted the ball and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. The Skyhawks failed on the PAT to make the score 9-7 with 7:12 left in the first quarter.
Point pulled ahead 16-7 shortly before halftime when Rashad Louie completed a 53-yard pass to Ricardo Sloan. Point recovered a fumble by Duckett late in the third quarter and went on a 66-yard drive with Isiah Robinson scoring on a 5-yard run with 10:18 left to play.
Benedict ends the season with a 5-6 record. The Tigers were aiming for their first winning season since 2009.
"I just thought we would send our seniors out right and send them off on a good note, instead it's just a sour note for us," White said.
