AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit to cut the lead to one point, but the Augusta University Lady Jaguars were able to hold off the late surge and take a 73-68 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Augusta led 47-26 with 7:02 left in the third quarter and still maintained a 55-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers rallied with a 10-2 run early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 66-65 with 2:59 left in the game after a jumper by
Shirvel Luke. Luke scored a career-high 22 points for Benedict, which falls to 5-5 on the season.
Augusta used back-to-back three-point plays to build the lead back to seven points, 72-65, with 1:50 left on the clock. Benedict did not score a field goal in the final 2:59, getting three free throws.
Augusta improved to 3-3 on the season.
Destiny Betts had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Tigers.
Shanaissa White and
MiKeisha Moore added 11 points each.
Benedict is back in action on Tuesday, hosting North Greenville University in a non-conference contest at 6 p.m.
