COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 15th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers had three players in double figures and dominated the boards in a 72-54 victory over Paine College on Saturday afternoon.
Regime McCombs hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points, while
Destiny Betts scored a season-high 15 points and
Terri Jacobs added 14 points for the Lady Tigers, who improved to 21-2 overall and 11-2 in the SIAC.
Paine fell to 4-18 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC. Aalyiha Wright led the Lady Lions with 15 points, while Janisha Wilkerson added 14.
Benedict out-rebounded Paine 54-31. Benedict's 27 offensive rebounds resulted in 24 second-chance points.
An 8-0 run opened up an 18-8 lead for the Lady Tigers in the first quarter, although Paine cut the lead to 20-14 at the quarter break. After Paine cut the lead to 20-17 early in the second quarter, McCombs answered with a 3-pointer and Betts scored a layup for a 25-17 lead. A layup by
Kari Jones gave Benedict a 37-28 lead at the half.
Benedict took a 60-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter. A three-point play by Jacobs with 1:19 left to play gave the Lady Tigers their largest lead, 72-52.
Betts and
DaVontaye Merritt led Benedict with eight rebounds each. The 23 rebounding differential tied for their second largest this season.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action next Saturday against rival Claflin University at 1 p.m.
