BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 14
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 SIAC Basketball Tournament with a 68-55 victory over Paine College in a quarterfinal contest on Wednesday at the Bill Harris Arena.
Terri Jacobs had a dominating performance with 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
Regime McCombs made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points.
The Lady Tigers, the nation's leader in rebounding margin in Division II, grabbed 62 rebounds in the contest, matching their second-best effort of the season. Nearly half of those, 29, were on the offensive end, resulting in 16 second-chance points for the Lady Tigers.
DaVontaye Merritt also reached double figures with 10 rebounds. Benedict outrebounded Paine by 27 rebounds.
Benedict, now 25-2, advances to the tournament semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m. They will face the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal matchup between Miles and Claflin.
Benedict led 18-15 after the first quarter, but then outscored Paine 9-1 at the start of the second period to take a 27-16 lead. A 3-pointer by
Ieisha Hopwood with 2:34 left in the first half gave the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the half, 37-21. Paine was able to close the gap to 37-26 at the break.
An eight-point run in the third period by the Lady Tigers gave Benedict a 47-32 lead. Benedict had a 56-43 lead heading into the final period.
Paine wraps up its season with a 10-19 record. Marquel Thompson led the Lady Lions with 16 points.
