COLUMBIA, S.C. – Claflin University swept Benedict 3-0 in an SIAC volleyball match on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Claflin cruised to a 25-11 victory in the first set, then held off Benedict in the second and third sets, 25-20.
Benedict trailed 18-13 in the second set before scoring three straight points to cut the lead to 18-16. Claflin scored the next five points for a 23-16 lead. The Lady Tigers rallied with four straight points to cut the lead to 23-20, but Claflin closed out the set on a pair of Benedict errors for the win.
The Lady Tigers fell behind 9-2 early in the third set, but rallied to cut the lead to 18-17 on a kill by
V'Aira Harris. Claflin then scored the next five points for a 23-17 lead and held on for the 25-20 win.
Harris led Benedict with eight kills while adding 10 digs.
Aaliyah Lawson added six kills and had seven assists.
Brianne McMillian had a team-high 11 assists.
Majda Cisic had a team-high 14 digs.
Benedict falls to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the SIAC.
Claflin, 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the SIAC, was led by Bria Bronston, the 2015 SIAC Co-Player of the Year, who had 15 kills and hit .387. Sonia Rosales had 30 assists, while Jhi Piper-Murles had 13 digs.
Benedict travels to Paine in Augusta, Ga., on Thursday night. The next home match is Oct. 26 against Edward Waters for a non-conference matchup.
