Story Text / Teaser. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers committed 40 turnovers and saw a 12-point first-half lead disappear as St. Augustine's College took a 74-62 victory in the WSSU Red & White Classic in the Gaines Center on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers, who were ranked 25
th nationally in the WBCA preseason coach's poll, drop to 0-2 on the season. St. Augustine's improves to 2-1.
Benedict led the entire first half, finishing the first quarter with an 18-9 lead and increasing the lead to 25-13 after a fast-break layup by
Shannon Owens with 4:26 left in the first half. The Lady Tigers had a 31-25 lead at the halftime break.
St. Augustine's opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 31, and the Lady Falcons took their first lead of the game at 38-36 with 5:25 left in the third quarter. St. Augustine's led by as much as eight points, 51-43, before the Lady Tigers got layups by
Ay'Anna Bey and Owens to cut the lead to 51-47 heading into the fourth quarter.
Benedict cut the lead to 56-51 early in the fourth quarter, but St. Augustine's scored the next five points on a layup and a three-point play to push the lead to 10 points with 5:57 remaining, and the Lady Tigers could not trim the lead to under seven points the rest of the way.
Essence Stinnette led Benedict with 11 points. Bey had 10 points and 11 rebounds, but also committed 12 turnovers. St. Augustine's scored 39 points off Benedict's 40 turnovers.
Benedict will take on tournament host Winston-Salem State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
