JACKSON, Tenn. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the season, rallying from a 14-point first-half deficit to beat Lane College, 64-61, on Monday night in an SIAC matchup.
Ay'Anna Bey scored a season-high 22 points for the Lady Tigers, now 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC. Lane falls to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC.
Lane jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter and pushed the lead to 29-15 with 4:40 left in the first half. A four-point play by
Jordan Dawson with 24 seconds on the clock cut the lead to 32-25 at the half.
The Lady Tigers scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the contest, and took their first lead since the opening minute of the game on a layup by
Ayanna Armstead with 7:13 left in the third quarter to make it 36-34. A 3-pointer by Bey gave Benedict its largest lead, 51-41, with 1:20 left in the third quarter.
The Lady Dragons rallied back to tie the contest at 51-51, but the Lady Tigers stopped the rally with a three-point play by
JaBree Jones. Jones hit two free throws with 1:52 left to give Benedict a 63-57 lead. Lane cut the lead to 63-61 with 33 seconds left, but Jones hit one free throw with 16 seconds left to seal the victory.
Armstead added 16 points for the Lady Tigers. Antrice McCoy led Lane with 17 points.
Benedict is back in action on Thursday, traveling to Fort Valley State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
