COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers wrapped up the 2016-17 regular season with a dominating 89-48 victory over Paine College on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena for their 12th win in a row.
Destiny Betts had her 14th double-double of the season with 26 points and 16 rebounds while registering a career-high five blocked shots with a season-high five steals. MiKeisha Moore scored 25 points, hitting seven 3-pointers, while LeAnna Morrison added 11 points.
Benedict improves to 18-7 overall and 14-1 in the SIAC. Paine falls to 11-15 and 5-10 in the SIAC.
Paine took an early 6-1 lead at the start of the game, but Benedict took the lead for good at 11-9 on a fast-break layup by Betts. Benedict outscored Paine 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 34-20 lead at the break. The Lady Tigers exploded for 31 points in the third quarter to build a 31-point lead heading into the final period. The 41-point final margin of victory was the largest this season for the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Tigers held the Lady Lions to just 25.4 percent shooting, a season-low for Benedict opponents. The eight blocked shots in the game were also a season-high for Benedict. The Lady Tigers also forced 24 turnovers and outscored Paine 30-7 in points off turnovers.
Briona Andrews led Paine with 12 points.
The Lady Tigers will take their 12-game winning streak to the SIAC Tournament next week in Birmingham, Ala. Benedict, the defending SIAC Champions, has clinched the No. 1 seed from the East Division and will have a bye until Wednesday, March 1.
