COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College volleyball team staged two big rallies in the second and third sets to take a 3-0 victory over the Columbia College Koalas in a non-conference volleyball match on Wednesday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict won the match 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 to improve to 5-7 overall. Columbia College falls to 0-13.
The first match was close, with Benedict holding an early lead only to see Columbia College tie the score at 17 after two straight errors by the Lady Tigers. Benedict scored the next four points for a 21-17 lead before scoring two straight points to cut the lead to 21-19. The Lady Tigers got a pair of kills by
Torcealon Kelley and back-to-back attack errors by the Koalas to close out the first set.
Columbia College started out the second set with an 11-6 lead, but Benedict surged ahead with eight straight points behind the serving of
Brianne McMillian, getting three kills by
Adrionna Washington during that rally. Washington led the Lady Tigers with 12 kills on the evening.
After Columbia College scored on a kill to stop that run, Benedict went on another run, scoring the next seven points for a 21-12 lead and closed out the set with four straight points, the final three points all coming off errors by Columbia College.
The Koalas jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third set and still had a 15-10 lead midway through the set. Benedict tied the set at 17-17 after a kill by
Mariah Cobbin. Benedict reeled off seven straight points during that run to take a 22-17 lead. After a kill gave the Koalas a point, the Lady Tigers closed out the set with the final three points, getting the match winner on a kill by Kelley.
McMillian had a double-double with 31 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Friday, hosting rival Claflin at 6 p.m.
