COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers recorded a season-high 13 blocks and swept Johnson & Wales 3-0 in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict, which lost 3-0 at Johnson & Wales a month ago, won the match 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 to improve to 8-7 overall. Johnson & Wales falls to 11-8.
Taylor Stephens led the defense with a career-high 12 block assists, while
Kiera Brothers had seven block assists to go along with eight kills.
Adrionna Washington had a team-high nine kills.
Ashleigh Reeves had a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs.
Majda Cisic had a team-high 20 digs.
Benedict jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the first set before the Wildcats cut the lead to 11-9. Benedict responded with the next three points to push the lead to 14-9. Johnson & Wales rallied to cut the lead to 20-19, but the Lady Tigers closed out the set with the final four points, getting a kill from
Jasmine Wright and taking advantage of three errors by the Wildcats.
The second set was tied 5-5 when the Lady Tigers went on a nine-point run, with Brothers getting a pair of kills and
Ka'Tia Wright serving up an ace. A six-point run by the Wildcats later in the set closed the gap to 16-15. A four-point run gave the Lady Tigers some separation, pushing the lead to 21-16. The Wildcats got within 23-20, but the Lady Tigers took advantage of two more Johnson & Wales errors to win the second set.
Benedict rallied from a 16-11 deficit in the third set, getting a six-point run to take the lead, with kills by
V'Aira Harris and
Jasmine Wright. Johnson & Wales cut the lead to 21-20, but Benedict closed out the set with the final four points, getting the last two with Cisic serving back-to-back aces.
Benedict is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Morris College in Sumter at 6:30 p.m. The next home match will be Oct. 9 against rival Claflin.
