COLUMBIA, S.C. – Clark Atlanta used a 9-2 run late in the fourth quarter to pull away and take a 64-61 victory over the Benedict College Lady Tigers in a SIAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict had a 54-50 lead after a layup by
Ay'Anna Bey with 6:04 left to play. The Lady Panthers got a three-point play by Naomi Holloway, then she followed with a 3-pointer to give Clark Atlanta the lead. Benedict tied the game 56-56 on a layup by
Shanaissa White with 5:28 remaining, but the Lady Panthers took the lead for good on a free throw and then added another layup by Holloway.
Benedict falls to 7-15 overall and 7-7 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta moves to 14-7 and remains in first place in the SIAC East with a 12-2 conference record.
Bey led the Lady Tigers with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Ayanna Armstead and
MiKeisha Moore added 11 points each, while
Andresha Smith had a game-high 11 rebounds. Benedict had a 49-37 rebounding advantage and outscored Clark Atlanta 14-5 in second-chance points.
Holloway led the Lady Panthers with 20 points, while Marissa Mandledove came close to a triple-double with 11 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
Benedict shot 32.1 percent from the floor, including making just four of 23 3-point attempts (17.4 percent).
Clark Atlanta had as much as an 11-point lead in the first quarter and built the lead to as much as 17 points in the second quarter before Benedict cut the lead to 38-29 at the half. Benedict scored the first seven points of the third quarter and tied the contest 48-48 heading to the fourth quarter. A layup by Bey at the start of the fourth quarter gave the Lady Tigers their first lead of the game.
Benedict is back in action next Saturday, with their final home game of the season against rival Claflin University at 1 p.m. The game will be part of Reunion Weekend, and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
