COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Kentucky State Thorobreds rushed for 386 yards and six touchdowns to defeat the Benedict College Tigers 42-14 on Saturday in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in the final game of the season for the Tigers.
Benedict wraps up the 2019 season with a 1-9 record. The Thorobreds improve to 7-3 and wrap up the best single-season turnaround in the NCAA after going 0-10 in 2018.
Kentucky State scored on its first two drives to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers used an 11-play, 79-yard drive, with
Phillip Brown finishing the drive off with a six-yard quarterback keeper, to cut the lead to 14-7 with 5:44 left in the first half.
The Thorobreds opened the second half with an 87-yard scoring drive. The highlight of the drive was a 52-yard run by Jordan Level. Christopher Coneway scored on a three-yard run to make the score 21-7 with 10:27 remaining. Benedict fumbled the ball away on its next possession, and the Thorobreds took over and went 60 yards on eight plays for another rushing touchdown and a 28-7 lead.
Kentucky State opened the fourth quarter with a 16-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Jackson, then Jaylen Myers scored on KSU's next possession for a 42-7 lead with 6:51 left in the game.
The Tigers recovered a KSU fumble and closed the game with an eight-play, 41-yard scoring drive. Brown scored on a three-yard run with 30 seconds left in the game.
Benedict finished with 281 yards of total offense, their third-best effort of the season.
Tyrone Turner Jr. led the Tigers with 58 yards rushing. Kentucky State finished with 458 yards of total offense, the second-most by a Benedict opponent this season.
Amari Andrews led the Benedict defense with 12 tackles.
Robert Cummings added eight tackles.
