SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kentucky State ended Benedict College's run in the SIAC Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday at the Upward Star Center.
Kentucky State won the match 25-21, 25-20, 25-19, staging late rallies in the first two sets. The loss ended Benedict's 2019 season with a 22-12 record, Benedict's first 20-win season in more than 10 years. Kentucky State improved to 25-10. Kentucky State would then defeat Albany State in the tournament semifinals, then lost to Spring Hill 3-0 in the championship game later Wednesday afternoon.
V'Aira Harris led the Lady Tigers with 12 kills.
Adrionna Washington added eight kills, while
Ashleigh Reeves contributed with 24 assists and 14 digs.
Benedict jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set. Kentucky State later went on an 8-1 run to pull ahead 13-10. The Lady Tigers used a 6-0 run to jump ahead 17-14. Kentucky State regained the lead by scoring the next four points. A pair of KSU errors gave Benedict a 19-18 lead. After KSU tied the match, another Lady Thorobred error gave Benedict a 20-19 lead. Kentucky State would score six of the final seven points to win the first set.
The Lady Tigers fell behind early in the second set 4-0, but would fight back to take a 7-5 lead. Benedict had a 16-15 lead after a kill by Washington. The Lady Thorobreds scored the next six points, all on Benedict errors, to take a 21-16 lead and the Thorobreds would secure the victory.
