COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers scored the first five points of overtime and held on for an 86-85 non-conference victory over Limestone College on Thursday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict improves to 9-2 overall. Limestone falls to 8-4.
The Lady Tigers had as much as a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Limestone chipped away and tied the game at 69-69 on a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining in regulation. Benedict's
Wykira Johnson-Kelly missed a driving layup at the buzzer.
In overtime, Benedict got free throws from
Shanassia White and Johnson-Kelly, as well as a layup from
Ay'Anna Bey to take a 74-69 lead with 3:38 on the clock. A 3-pointer by Johnson-Kelly with 1:09 remining put the Lady Tigers ahead 82-75. The Lady Saints answered with a 3-pointer and a layup to cut the lead to 82-80 with 47 seconds left.
Mahogany Randall scored on a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound to make it 84-80 with 15 seconds remaning.
Limestone answered with a basket with just three seconds left and immediately fouled, putting Johnson-Kelly on the line. She sank both free throws with three seconds remaining for an 86-82 lead. The Saints closed out the game with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Bey, the reigning SIAC Player of the Week, had a huge game for the Lady Tigers, scoring a season-high 36 points. She connected on a season-high 14 field goals on a season-high 20 attempts. She added a game-high 14 rebounds and also had a season-high three blocked shots.
Randall added 17 points and Johnson-Kelly chipped in with 12 points.
Benedict dominated the boards, outrebounding the Lady Saints 53-34.
The Lady Tigers return to action on Saturday, hosting Lane College, the defending SIAC champions, at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
