MOBILE, Ala. – A strong all-around performance for the Benedict College Lady Tigers led to an 88-64 defeat of Spring Hill College on Monday night in a SIAC women's basketball game.
Benedict improves to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the SIAC. Spring Hill College falls to 4-9 overall and 3-2 in the SIAC.
Ay'Anna Bey led the Lady Tigers with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Amaya Ashby added 14 points, while
Shanassia White contributed with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 20-13 lead off a 3-point shot by
Jasmine Gholson with 1:33 left in the first quarter.
Benedict continued the hot shooting in the second quarter, jumping out to a 13-point lead after three minutes of play. Spring Hill battled back closing the gap to 28-25 after a 10-0 run. In the final 4:30 of the half, the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Badgers 12-6 to take a 40-31 lead heading into halftime.
Spring Hill opened the second half on a 9-3 run to close the gap back to three, 43-40. After a back and forth affair throughout the remainder of the third quarter, back-to-back 3-pointers by
Ayanna Armstead and Ashby extended the Lady Tiger's lead to 10, 56-46.
Benedict took a 66-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers would extend their lead to as much as 26 in the quarter to secure the victory against the Lady Badgers.
Benedict out-rebounded Spring Hill 51-29 to continue their strong presence on the glass.
The Lady Tigers will be back in the HRC Arena on Saturday afternoon against Paine College at 1 p.m.
