COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 12th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers' bench held a 47-17 advantage to help defeat Clark Atlanta University, 83-64, on Saturday afternoon in a SIAC women's basketball game in the HRC Arena.
Benedict improves to 19-2 overall with its 14th straight victory and 10-1 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta falls to 6-14 and 4-7 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers were led by
Wykira Johnson-Kelly, who put up 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field.
Shanassia White added 11 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks while
Camryn Bostick contributed with 14 points and four steals.
Benedict jumped out to an early 10-3 lead off a 3-pointer from
Ayanna Armstead with 7:17 left in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers held a 17-13 lead after one quarter. Clark Atlanta went on a 15-1 run midway through the second quarter to take the lead, 31-24, with 1:34 remaining until halftime. Benedict closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to close the gap to 34-32 heading into the break.
The Lady Tigers got back on track in the second half, outscoring the Lady Panthers 51-30. Johnson-Kelly and Bostick outscored Clark Atlanta 31-30 in the second half, with Johnson-Kelly scoring 19 of her 24 points in the final 20 minutes.
The Lady Tigers held a 40-22 advantage in points scored in the paint and out shot the Lady Panthers 50.8 percent (31-61) to 33.9 percent (19-56).
Benedict will host Fort Valley State University on Monday at 5:30 p.m. inside the HRC Arena.
