FORT VALLEY, Ga. – A late run for the 11th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers proved to be too little, too late as they fell to Fort Valley State University, 63-60, on Saturday afternoon, snapping Benedict's 15-game winning streak.
Benedict falls to 20-3, 11-2 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State improves to 11-11, 7-6 in the SIAC.
Ayanna Armstead led the Lady Tigers with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Ay'Anna Bey contributed with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Fort Valley State jumped out to a 6-0 lead to begin the game. Benedict bounced back with a 10-0 run to retake the lead. Fort Valley had a 16-14 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats extended their lead to as much as eight points before Benedict fought back, but still trailed 32-30 heading into halftime.
The Lady Tigers struggled from the field in the third quarter, shooting 4-18 (22 percent). A layup by Armstead as time expired tied the game up at 41-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
There were a total of four lead changes and three ties in the final quarter with Fort Valley State taking the largest lead of 10, 59-49, with 4:28 remaining in the game. Benedict went on a 11-2 run in the next three and a half minutes to tie the game back up at 60. This would not be enough as the Lady Tigers dropped their first game since November 30
th.
Benedict shot 17-for-68 (25 percent) from the field on Saturday afternoon, and made just 15 percent (3-for-20) from 3-point range. The Lady Tigers were also outrebounded for the first time all season, 52-47.
Benedict will travel to Clark Atlanta University on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
