COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers snapped a two-game losing streak with a spirited 3-0 victory over rival Claflin on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers took a hard-fought 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 victory to improve to 9-6 overall. Claflin falls to 6-5 on the season.
The first set was a game of spurts. Benedict scored three in a row for a 6-5 lead. Claflin followed with four points in a row to pull ahead 9-6. Benedict tied the score at 9-9 before Claflin scored four in a row. Claflin had a 19-16 lead before the Lady Tigers got three straight kills by
Cana Smith to tie the score at 19. Claflin scored the next point, then Benedict closed out the set with six straight points, finishing the set off with a pair of kills by
Kaiah Green and a kill by
Kennede Thomas.
The Lady Tigers used a 9-0 run in the second set to take an early 11-2 lead. Claflin chipped away and got within 23-19.
Daija Walton had a pair of kills to end the second set.
Benedict pulled away from a close 13-12 score in the third set to take a 19-14 lead. A kill by Walton and a Claflin attack error gave Benedict a 23-17 lead before the Lady Panthers scored the next three points. Walton and
Brikyia Benjamin had kills to clinch the third set and the match.
Smith led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills, while Walton added 11.
Ashleigh Reeves had a double-double with 33 assists and a team-high 19 digs.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Thursday, hosting North Greenville at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match.
