Tigers Travel To Take On Miles

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers look to snap a three-game losing streak when they travel to Fairfield, Ala., to take on the two-time SIAC champion Miles Golden Bears.

Kickoff is 4 p.m. Central (5 p.m. Eastern), and the game will be available on ESPN+ streaming service (subscription required). Live stats will be available here.

"We've got a resilient group of guys," Benedict head coach Chennis Berry said. "They've been fighting through it all. We've had some tough losses and some close losses. Our kids still believe. They're ready for the next challenge, which is a really good Miles team."

The Tigers (2-3 overall, 0-2 SIAC) will look to rebound after a season-low 233 yards of total offense and 14 points last week against Fort Valley State. While the offense struggled with a pair of backup quarterbacks, the defense stepped up and recorded seven tackles for loss and a pair of sacks, and held the Wildcats out of the end zone after a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line.

"Our defense was playing lights out," Berry said. "Those guys were really getting after it and playing the best ball they've played all year."

That defense will be put to the test once again, as Miles (2-3, 1-1 SIAC) comes in boasting a rushing offense that ranks third in the SIAC (185.4 yards per game), and 36th nationally. Miles' record is deceiving in that they opened the season with back-to-back games against Division I opponents and played respectable in a 14-13 overtime loss to Alabama State, then had a third-quarter lead against Southern University before falling 41-24.

The Miles defense ranks second in the SIAC and 26th nationally, allowing just 283.8 yards per game. Linebacker Mitchell Smiley was named the SIAC preseason Defensive Player of the Year before the season and is living up to the hype. He leads the Golden Bears with 29 total tackles. He's also had 1.5 tackles for loss and a pair of interceptions.

With quarterback Eric Phoenix out last week against Fort Valley State, the Tigers used a pair of quarterbacks – Nathan Harden and Chardell Hales – to lead the offense. Freshman Zavien Foster is the projected starter against Miles, and would make his collegiate debut.

Miles was projected to continue its reign as the top team in the SIAC, and the Golden Bears are stinging from last week's lopsided loss to Eastern Division rival Albany State. This game is also Miles' Homecoming game.

"It doesn't get any easier," Berry said. "They do a great job, Coach Ruffin and his staff. We'll have our hands full. But we'll be prepared. We're ready for the challenge. If we want this one, we've got to go and get it."
