FAIRFIELD, Ala. –
Ay'Anna Bey made a three-point play with 34 seconds left and Miles missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Benedict College Lady Tigers handed Miles its first loss of the season, 74-72, in a SIAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon.
Bey finished with a game-high and season-high 30 points to lead the Lady Tigers, now 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the SIAC. Miles falls to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC.
Benedict had as much as a 10-point lead in the third quarter, the last time at 48-38 after a jumper by
Camryn Bostick with 4:16 left in the quarter. Miles trimmed the lead to 53-51 before
Taylor Christmas scored to end the quarter and give Benedict a 55-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The game stayed close in the fourth quarter. Benedict never trailed, but the Lady Tigers also never led by more than five points. Bey's three-point play with 34 seconds left made it 71-66. Miles answered with a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left. Bey sank two free throws to make it 73-69. Miles hit another 3-pointer with seven seconds left to trim the lead to 73-72. Bostick sank one free throw with four seconds left, and Miles' last-second shot missed.
Ayanna Armstead added 11 points and Christmas chipped in 10 points.
Benedict continues its road trip with a game at LeMoyne-Owen on Monday night at 5:30 p.m.
