ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Benedict scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to build an 11-point lead and went on to take an 81-71 victory over Claflin in the Paws Up HBCU Classic Tournament on Saturday.
Keondra Archie scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers, who have now won four games in a row to improve to 6-3 on the season. She scored a pair of layups to ignite Benedict's 8-0 run.
Wykira Johnson-Kelly added 19 points, while
Ay'Anna Bey chipped in with 14 points.
Claflin, now 1-6 on the season, hit a pair of 3-pointers to close out the first quarter to take a 19-14 lead, and built as much as a seven-point lead in the second quarter before taking a 38-33 lead at the half. A 3-pointer by
Jasmine Gholson gave Benedict a 43-42 lead with 6:01 left in the third quarter, and the Lady Tigers never trailed again. Benedict took a 57-54 lead at the end of the third quarter, then built the lead to 11 points by scoring the first eight points of the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers return to action with a rematch against Tuskegee on the road Wednesday. That game will be a non-conference contest.
