COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tuskegee scored the first five points in overtime and went on to take an 86-78 victory over Benedict, handing the 23
rd-ranked Lady Tigers their first loss of the season.
Benedict falls to 8-1 on the season. Tuskegee improves to 10-1.
Ay'Anna Bey scored a layup at the buzzer in regulation to send the game to an extra period. Benedict had as much as a nine-point lead, 59-50, with 9:04 left in regulation. Tuskegee tied the game at 63-63 on a layup with 5:08 remaining and took their first lead of the second half, 67-65, on a jumper by Ashiala Jackson with 2:39 on the clock. Jackson led Tuskegee with 36 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Wykira Johnson-Kelly tied the game with a driving layup, but Tuskegee hit a 3-pointer by India Blakely with 1:48 remaining. The Lady Tigers answered with a 3-pointer from
Shanassia White to tie the game at 70 with 1:18 to play. Tuskegee took a 72-70 lead with six seconds left, before Bey scored to tie the game and send the contest to overtime.
Johnson-Kelly led the Lady Tigers with 26 points.
Benedict missed its first six shots in the extra period before
Camryn Bostick scored to make it 77-74 with 2:47 left in overtime. Tuskegee went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to nine points, 83-74, with 1:17 remaining.
Tuskegee made five of their six shots in overtime, while Benedict went 3-for-11 from the floor. For the game, Tuskegee shot 45.9 percent (34-of-74), a season-high for a Benedict opponent. Benedict ranked first in the nation entering the game in field-goal percentage defense. Benedict shot 36.6 percent (30-of-82).
Bostick scored a season-high 16 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Bey added 13 points.
The rivalry moves to Tuskegee for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern each day.
