Benedict Ranked 23rd By AFCA For First Time In School History

WACO, TEX.– For the first time in school history, the Benedict College football is nationally ranked by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

The Tigers are ranked No. 23 in this week's edition of the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll.

"To God be the Glory! I'm extremely proud of our football program of being nationally recognized by our peers as one of the top programs in all of Division Two football," Benedict head coach Chennis Berry said. "Congratulations to my staff and my players for their hard work, but there's still unfinished business and a lot of work to be done, but I'm extremely grateful to be recognized."

The AFCA poll is voted on by a panel of 30 NCAA Division II head football coaches.

The top eight teams remained the same this week with Ferris State (Mich.) holding their top spot after a 33-28 win over then-No. 25 Saginaw Valley State (Mich.). Grand Valley State (Mich.) remained unbeaten and at No. 2 after its 45-3 victory over American International (Mass.), setting the stage for the biggest game of the season in Division II as the Lakers travel to Ferris State for a battle of 1 versus 2. The Bulldogs have won eight of the last nine meetings, including last year's playoff game, 54-20.

There is only one other Top 25 matchup this week, and it includes a team that is ranked in the AFCA Top 25 for the first time ever. Benedict (S.C.) enters the poll for the first time at No. 23. The Tigers will travel to conference rival and No. 21 Albany State (Ga.) on Saturday.

Last week, Benedict cracked the national Top 25 of the D2football.com poll, coming in at No. 24. The Tigers moved up one spot to No. 23 in this week's poll. Albany State is ranked No. 14 by D2football.com.
