COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won their 2022-23 season opener by going on a 10-1 run in the fourth quarter to take a 64-61 victory over Paine College on Saturday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Mahogany Randall, who missed all last season with an injury, returned to the lineup to lead the Lady Tigers with a career-high 24 points. Freshman
Shakera Duncan had a double-double in her Lady Tiger debut with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Benedict used a second-quarter surge to pull away and build as much as a 10-point lead, 26-16. Paine cut the lead to 31-25 at the half.
Paine rallied to take a 37-36 lead in the third quarter, but Benedict scored the final four points of the third quarter to take a 48-43 lead heading into the final quarter.
The score was tied at 50 before Benedict went on a 10-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Randall with 4:53 left to play, and Benedict held on for the win.
The Lady Tigers return to action on Monday at home to take on Clinton College at 6 p.m.
