COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers placed six players in double figures and scored a season-high in points as they defeated Fort Valley State for the second game in a row, 98-83, on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers improve to 16-6 overall and 10-2 in the SIAC with their fifth straight victory.
Ay'Anna Bey scored 18 of her team-high 21 points in the second half to lead the Lady Tigers.
Wykira Johnson-Kelly added 18 points.
Keondra Archie and
Ayanna Armstead had 13 points each, and
Jasmine Gholson hit four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Shanassia White flirted with a triple-double, scoring 10 points, dishing out a career-high 10 assists, and grabbing seven rebounds.
Diamond Jones had 23 points and Jah'ne Brown had 20 for the Lady Wildcats, who fall to 5-13 overall and 3-10 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers scored the first 11 points of the game and had as much as a 13-point lead in the first quarter before the Lady Wildcats trimmed the lead to 18-13 at the end of the quarter. Benedict built a 16-point lead, 43-27, on a 3-pointer by Gholson late in the second quarter and had a 43-31 lead at the half. The lead grew to as much as 26 points in the third quarter.
Fort Valley State, which lost by 41 points to Benedict on Monday, cut a 25-point Benedict lead in the fourth quarter down to 10 points, 87-77, with 3:39 remaining, but that was as close as they would get.
The Lady Tigers return to action on Monday, hosting Clark Atlanta in another SIAC contest. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
