COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College men's volleyball team won the first set, but Fort Valley State rallied to win the next three and defeat the Tigers 3-1 in a SIAC men's volleyball match on Wednesday night at C.A. Johnson High School.
Fort Valley State won the match 22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 27-25.
Benedict trailed 20-17 late in the first set, but rallied with three points on a kill by
Donovan Wilmott and a pair of Wildcat errors. The Wildcats pulled ahead with the next two points, but then the Tigers closed out the set with five straight points. Wilmott had a kill,
Benjamin Attles scored an ace and
Ras Jesse Delancy had a kill to tie the match at 23. A pair of Fort Valley State errors closed out the set.
Fort Valley State took the next two sets. In the fourth set, the Tigers pulled ahead 21-19, but the Wildcats scored four of the next five points to take a 23-22 lead, then again 24-23 after the two teams traded points.
A Fort Valley State error tied the score and Benedict took the lead on a kill by Attles. The Wildcats used a kill and a pair of Benedict attack errors to close out the match.
Delancy led the Tigers, now 3-11 overall and 2-4 in the SIAC, with 17 kills with a .400 hitting percentage, while Wilmott added 13 kills and Attles had 10.
Terran Walkin notched 38 assists, while
Clint Forbes, the reigning SIAC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded 10 digs.
Fort Valley, now 3-9 overall and 3-1 in the SIAC, hit .305 for the match and recorded 13 blocks.
The Tigers travel to take on Morehouse in Atlanta on Saturday.
