COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers split a SIAC doubleheader on Saturday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict dropped a close 3-2 match to Lane College, and then blanked LeMoyne-Owen College 3-0.
Lane took a 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10 victory. Benedict defeated LeMoyne-Owen 25-21, 25-9, 25-21.
Benedict goes to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the SIAC.
Aliyah Jones had 11 kills in the match against Lane, hitting .269.
Jade Hollins had 24 assists and
La'Jai Wilson had a team-high 15 digs.
After splitting the first two sets, Benedict had a 14-10 lead in the third set and had a 20-14 lead after a service ace by Hollins. The Dragons scored the next six points to tie the score at 20. Benedict had a 23-22 lead after a kill by
Brikyia Benjamin, but Lane closed out the set by scoring the final three points on a pair of kills and a Benedict error.
Benedict tied the match at two sets each with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set. Lane jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the fifth set and held on for the win.
Against LeMoyne-Owen,
Cana Smith had 16 kills and hit .324, while Jones added a season-high 15 kills and hit .423. Hollins had a season-high 41 assists. Wilson had 21 digs.
Benedict will be back in action next weekend at the SIAC Crossover Tournament in Cartersville, Ga. Benedict will open play on Friday against Kentucky State at 3 p.m.
