COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Benedict College held Albany State to 39.7 percent shooting and got a career night from Amaya Ashby as the Lady Tigers defeated Albany State University 72-58 on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict placed four players in double figures. Madison Golden led the Lady Tigers with 19 points, 16 of those coming in the second half as Benedict outscored the Golden Rams 41-25 in the final 20 minutes. Ashby scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, Taylor Christmas added 17 points, and Mahogany Randall scored 10 points.
The Lady Tigers would get a career night from Ashby as she shot 50 percent from 3-point range, connecting on 4-of-8 and pulling in 13 rebounds to give her a double-double. The 17 points matched her career high as well.
Albany State jumped out to an early 21-16 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers rallied to go into halftime with a two-point lead after a 3-pointer to end the half by Jazmin Grayson. Â
After Albany State tied the game at 42 with 5:30 left in the third quarter, Benedict went on another 11-point run to take a 58-47 lead going into the final 10 minutes. Benedict increased the lead to as much as 14 points in the fourth quarter and kept a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Benedict improves to 11-13 overall and 9-8 in the SIAC. Albany State falls to 6-16 overall and 5-12 in the SIAC.
Benedict returns to action with a rivalry match-up at home against Allen University Saturday at 1 p.m.Â
