MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University, the No. 1 team in the country, cruised to a 4-0 victory over Benedict College in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship on Monday morning.
Barry started out by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches by 6-0 scores to earn the doubles point.
In singles action, Barry took 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles against
Emi Smith and
Fabeina Riggins.
Celeste Deniz Reyes was able to win one game against Xiyao Wang, the 39
th-ranked women's tennis player in Division II, falling 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
With four points secured, the match was completed with three singles matches still unfinished. Barry's Deniz Khazan, the nation's No. 1- ranked player, had a 6-0, 5-0 lead over
Valerie Essome at No. 1 singles.
Patricia Wamba was able to win three games against Dinara Alloiarova, the 19
th-ranked player. Their No. 2 singles match was 6-2, 4-1 when it was stopped.
Tanatswa Musabaeka was trailing 6-0, 5-1 at No. 3 singles against 16
th-ranked Daniela Farfan.
Benedict concludes the season at 11-8. Barry, now 23-0 and the five-time defending NCAA champion, advances to take on the winner of Monday's second match between fourth-seed Lynn and fifth-seed West Alabama at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
