ATLANTA, Ga. – A record high, 1,650 student-athletes, was named to the 2022-2023 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Commissioner's All-Academic Team for maintaining at least a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average throughout the 2022-23 academic year, with 169 Benedict College student-athletes recognized for their academic achievement.
Student-athletes with a 3.2 or higher were considered for all-academic team honors. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions usually involved in that sport. Benedict had 14 student-athletes achieve this distinguished honor.
Earning this honor from Benedict were: Ja'ron Kilpatrick and Loobert Denelus in football; Aliyah Jones and Lajai Wilson in women's volleyball; Divurjot Singh in men's tennis; Valerie Essome in women's tennis; Clint Forbes and Donavon Wilmott in men's volleyball; Javel Best, Matthew Paul and Corey Witter in men's track & field; Daneika Williamson and Megan Thompson in women's track & field; and Jamaiyah Howard in softball.
Benedict placed 45 football players to the All-Academic Team. The baseball team placed 22, while the men's track & field had 21. The women's volleyball team placed 17, while the women's track & field team had 16. Softball had 13, followed by men's basketball with 11 and women's basketball with nine. Men's volleyball had seven, while men's and women's tennis had four each.
Fifty-nine students from 13 institutions recorded a 4.0 grade point average.
Miles College led all institutions in this year's All-Academic Honors by capturing four all-academic team awards. The Golden Bears captured team awards in football, men's and women's cross country, and men's basketball. Kentucky State collected three all-academic team awards in women's basketball, men's golf, and men's volleyball. Albany State University, Benedict College, and Lane College each captured two team awards. Benedict captured team awards in men's track & field and women's volleyball.
